Spire Global has won another commercial weather-data contract from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for satellite weather data, with the agency awarding the company nearly four million dollars to deliver global navigation satellite system (GNSS) radio occultation (RO) data, including RO profiles with Temporal Resolution Enhancements that provide a broader range of time sampling.

NOAA announced the award on 13 August as part of a $6.4 million bridge procurement between its Radio Occultation Data Buy 2 programme and the forthcoming Space-Based Environmental Monitoring vehicle, while Spire said the contract underlines demand for operational commercial satellite data rather than one-off demonstrations.

It is that a national agency is buying recurring satellite-derived data as an operational service, with specific daily delivery volumes and defined performance needs. In practical terms, that is the kind of procurement model that many Earth observation businesses want to see more often: a government customer paying for dependable data streams that slot into working forecasting systems.

Radio occultation sits slightly outside the optical and SAR imagery segment familiar to many remote sensing firms but the market lesson is highly transferable. If a supplier can prove that its data improves an existing workflow, whether that workflow is weather forecasting, flood warning, insurance exposure management or infrastructure monitoring, buyers are more willing to sign repeat contracts than they are to fund open-ended pilots.

NOAA’s wording matters here. The agency described the order as a bridge to a new procurement framework, which suggests a maturing route from experimental buys to structured long-term acquisition. That is useful market intelligence for all EO firms watching how public-sector customers shape demand in satellite data and analytics.

It also helps explain why commercial EO companies continue to invest in reliability, latency and product definition. The winning offer is not presented as space being exciting.
