Open Cosmos has announced €300 million in funding to expand its satellite manufacturing, Earth observation, connectivity and data services, with investment supporting operations in the UK, Spain, Portugal and Greece.
The funding, announced will help grow the company’s OpenConstellation shared satellite infrastructure, ConnectedCosmos communications network and DataCosmos analytics services. Investors include Lightrock, ETF Partners and the UK’s National Security Strategic Investment Fund.
Open Cosmos is seeking to bring observation, communications and analysis closer together, reducing the delay between collecting data and getting useful information to the people who need it.
The company says its next-generation constellation aims to reduce delivery times for EO intelligence from up to 48 hours to as little as 30 minutes, using onboard processing and inter-satellite communications.
Faster delivery could make satellite information more useful for applications such as emergency response, infrastructure monitoring and maritime surveillance. However, speed alone is not enough and as EO starts to cross the chasm, customers need dependable coverage, clear information about uncertainty and services that fit their existing decision-making processes.
For all remote sensing businesses, the expansion provides a reason to explore where specialist processing, validation and application expertise could complement larger satellite systems. Potential partnerships will depend on the services developed and the commercial arrangements offered.
The investment spans both EO and connectivity, so the full €300 million should not be described as funding for Earth observation alone. Its broader significance is the effort to connect satellite infrastructure with practical services, and the challenge of turning that investment into reliable customer outcomes.
