EarthDaily Analytics has won a Canadian government contract to develop an AI-enabled border monitoring demonstration platform, adding another example of how commercial Earth observation is moving from data supply into operational public-sector services.
The project, known as SMATAK (Space-based Monitoring, Alerts and Tactical Awareness Knowledge), is being led by Defence Research and Development Canada in collaboration with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. According to EarthDaily, the work will test how daily satellite data, AI-driven change detection and geospatial tools can support border monitoring by delivering alerts and analysis to users from national command through to the field.
Public procurement records show the contract was awarded earlier this year with a value of about C$2.23 million and runs to March 2027.
it is important to know that this is not a pure imagery sale and it is not framed as a one-off analytics study. EarthDaily is being contracted to build an end-to-end operational demonstration that combines data, automated detection, alerting and integration into tools that officials already use.

Buyers increasingly want EO firms to deliver workflows rather than pixels, with performance measured against response times, analyst usability and decision support rather than image quality alone. The closer a company gets to an operational problem, the harder it becomes to compete on raw data price alone.
There is also a wider lesson for the downstream market. Border monitoring is a sensitive and politically charged application but the commercial model is recognisable across other sectors including maritime surveillance, infrastructure monitoring, insurance and environmental compliance. Customers often need consistent revisit, automated triage and alerts that fit into existing systems, not a separate dashboard that creates more work.
The contract also underlines the value of persistence and long programme cycles in government EO business. EarthDaily says the new project builds on nearly a decade of collaboration with Canadian public agencies through earlier surveillance and cueing projects. That is a reminder that commercial traction in this part of the market often comes from patient iteration, trusted delivery and familiarity with procurement, not from a single technology announcement.
