NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey are inviting Earth observation companies to participate in a dedicated Industry Week exploring a greater commercial role in the future delivery of Landsat-quality data and products.
The Sustainable Land Imaging Commercialization Project Industry Week will introduce a product-based approach intended to underpin and complement continuing government Landsat operations.
Under the emerging model, commercial providers could supply Landsat-compatible data, help generate higher-order science products and provide automated ground-based calibration and validation capabilities.
Initial priority products
The first products, described as ‘Quick Wins’ are:
- Bathymetry
- Surface-water mapping
- Burned-area and burn-severity assessment
Future phases could extend the approach to evapotranspiration, vegetation indices, land-cover classification, snow and ice extent and impervious-surface products.
NASA and USGS say that open data, data quality and integrity, continuity, and responsible market stewardship will remain foundational principles. Government purchasing power and technical expertise could be used to establish common standards, reduce commercial risk and expand the market for Landsat-quality Earth observation information.
Who should participate?
NASA and USGS particularly encourage participation from:
- Earth observation operators and data providers capable of supplying compatible multispectral, hyperspectral or thermal imagery
- Analytics and product-generation companies experienced in producing, aggregating or distributing EO-derived products
- Manufacturers of autonomous spectrometers, thermal radiometers and other ground-based calibration and validation equipment
Industry Week programme
The open Community Briefing takes place on Monday 31 August 2026 at 1:30pm Eastern Time (6.30pm BST) In-person and virtual attendance will be available.
NASA and USGS will then hold invitation-only, company-specific deep-dive sessions from Tuesday 1 September to Friday 4 September 2026. These will explore technical capabilities, proposed architectures, technology gaps, calibration and validation approaches, and possible partnership models.
Organisations must submit their notice of interest or registration by 11:59pm Eastern Time on Tuesday 28 July 2026 (4:59am BST) on Wednesday 29 July.
